Removing a tree entirely on private property generally does not require a City of Edmonton Public Tree Permit, but work that could affect City-owned trees may. A Public Tree Permit may be required for work within 5 metres of a City-owned boulevard or open-space tree, or within 10 metres of a natural stand boundary. Excavation, grading or construction near public trees can also trigger requirements for a Tree Protection Plan or Tree Preservation Plan. Before removal, tree ownership, property boundaries and the surrounding root zone should be confirmed so protected public trees are not inadvertently damaged.

Treat any tree contacting an overhead power line as an electrical hazard and keep people, pets and equipment away from the area. Do not attempt to prune, pull or remove the branch yourself. Work around energized conductors, service lines and electrical utility clearances may require coordination with the utility and appropriately qualified tree workers. If storm damage brings a tree into contact with a line, the electrical hazard should be addressed before normal pruning, rigging or tree-removal work proceeds.
